A family home

For over 50 years, our family has been creating inspired wines with a deep sense of pride: that of being winemakers from father to son to daughters. Our inexhaustible passion is nourished by the region that welcomed us, that we love and that we respect: Provence.

Winegrowers at heart

From our family heritage comes our know-how. Wine artisans driven by a love of purity, our gestures are precise, our viticulture organic, our cellar interventions minimal. Common sense guides our choices. From this unique alchemy emerge our cuvées, subtle creations.

To give voice to the character of our terroirs, their radiant nature and their delicate expressions, we dare to revisit traditions, to leave the beaten track, to imagine other paths. Relentlessly, enthusiastically.

And while growing with the times, our family estate knows how to preserve what’s essential: its independence. When we add new plots, it’s in the name of what’s best: a virtuous autonomy, where we control every stage in the making of our wines.

A taste for sharing reinvented

The Figuière story is written in the plural, between brothers and sisters. The three of us live out the legacy that has been handed down from one generation to the next. Together, we complement each other so well! François tends our vines and explores their nuances in the cellar. Magali brings our bottles to light and sends them around the globe. Delphine sees to the long-term future of our projects.

We share a common desire: to make our Mediterranean cuvées, born of a sunny heritage, shine. In this sincere quest to share, we involve our team, who are a happy bunch, as well as our wine merchants and restaurateurs, both private and professional… All those loyal people who are part of our identity.

At Figuière, we invite, we receive, we exchange… Whether at L’Assiette, our family restaurant orchestrated by our chef and cousin Sébastien, or at Bastide Barbeiranne, our charming guest house surrounded by lush, inspiring nature! Here, we concoct singular moments to bring together lovers of the terroir, good produce, and wine. With conviviality, simplicity, and a touch of bohemian spirit… Just like home!

Anecdotes

The name Figuière comes from Figuiera – “fig tree” in Provençal dialect. A tree of impressive size once dominated the middle of one of the Domaine’s most beautiful plots, before it burned down. Baptisted by the Combards’ predecessor, André Connesson, transformed the name Figuiera into Domaine Saint André de Figuière. The Combards kept this name until February 2017, when they simplified the Estate name to “Figuière”.

Before becoming winegrowers just outside Chablis, Alain Combard and his wife ran a dairy farm and produced dairy products. Both Provençal (Alain was born in Salon de Provence, Gabrielle in Lantosque in the hinterland of Nice), they met in Chablis, she then a schoolteacher, he a young livestock breeder.

Alain and Gabrielle Combard had 4 children: Delphine, the eldest, Magali, the second, François, the third and the last, Valérie. François came to work alongside his father after graduating from the Beaux-Arts and completing his BTS in viticulture at Hyères. Delphine and Magali began their careers in management and sales respectively, working for large groups. They arrived in 2004, when the wave of rosés was still only a timid trend. Together, they manage the day-to-day operations at Figuière. Valérie manages Bastide Barbeiranne, offering her concierge services.

Figuière has hosted 5 editions of a performing arts festival named the “Figuière Festival”. Nicolas Barrot, artistic director and friend of François and his wife, Marie-Claire, has been leading the charge of this rich program. Each year, three successive evenings offers two shows to delight guests, while introducing them to the vineyard and its wines. And for Figuière, an incredible human adventure.

Our vineyard in Collobrières is called Clos Fanny, after the daughter of the previous owner, Fernand Thouron. Like Figuière, in this family winegrowers passed down generation to generation from father to daughter.

L’Assiette, Figuière’s restaurant, was born in 2020, the year of the COVID confinements! Chef Sébastien, the first cousin of the Combard children, and his partner Emma, spent many years on the Caribbean island of Tortola. They’ve retained their sense of relaxed hospitality and simple, tasty dishes.

Our accounts receivable manager, Sandrine Choine, arrived in 1994. She is the longest-serving of the fifty or so people who work at Figuière today.

When Alain Combard bought the vineyard in June 1992, it was already organic.  André Connesson, Figuière’s previous owner and an agricultural engineer, was one of the pioneers.  The estate has been Ecocert-certified since 1979.  Alain Combard continued the practice and applied it to each new hectare, despite the lack of support from the markets at the time.

An independent estate

To give voice to the character of our terroirs, their radiant nature and their delicate expressions, we dare to revisit traditions, leave the beaten track and imagine other paths. Relentlessly, enthusiastically.

Where it all began...

It was in Burgundy, in the 1970’s, that the roots of our winegrowing family were formed. For 25 years, Alain Combard,  developed with his friend Michel Laroche what would become one of the finest houses in Chablis: Domaine Laroche.

An aviator, sailor and insatiable explorer, Alain decided in 1992 to try a new adventure in winemaking. He set course for his native Provence. When he discovered Domaine Saint André de Figuière, he fell in love immediately. Its 18 hectares had already been farmed organically since 1979: a bold choice by its previous owner, André Connesson, an avant-garde agricultural engineer.

Alain moved in with a strong desire: to surprise with his whites, he the Burgundian! But it didn’t take long for him to become deeply convinced that a rosé from Provence deserved the equal attention of a white. A perfect alchemy was born between his Chablis know-how and this Provence terroir, still little recognized. The Figuière style was born!
